The number of patients on transplant waiting lists continues to grow creating an acute shortage of donor organs. In response some programs in the transplant community have enlarged the donor organ pool by expanding the criteria for donor acceptance. These organs may be suitable for some patients on the waiting list and may shorten the wait times resulting in decreased wait list mortality. However, expanded criteria donor (ECD) organs have risk factors that may result in less than optimal graft function and complications in recipients. The overall goal of this webinar is to review the ethical considerations, risk factors, and guidelines for informed consent in the use of ECD organs.
Target Audience:
Members of the donation and transplantation community serving transplant candidates and recipients to include coordinators, physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists, surgeons, intensive care specialists and other allied donation and transplantation center professionals and their colleagues with an interest in organ allocation, procurement and transplantation.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the webinar, participants should be able to:
  • Describe the difference between a standard organ donor and an expanded criteria donor (ECD)
  • Identify the content and format of current ECD informed consent protocols
  • Describe the major ethical issues associated with informed consent in the use of ECD organs
  • Define the donor risk index and discuss appropriate use of ECD
