Module 7: Legal and regulatory Considerations for the Preceptor

Resources and References

There are a variety of references to help preceptors with the legal and regulatory implications of precepting students.

Carolyn Buppert's book titled Nurse Practitioner's Business Practice and Legal Guide is an excellent resource for preceptors.

The CMS guidelines for students as well as the Nurse Practice Act are useful resources. Maryland's Nurse Practice Act which is Title VIII Health Occupations Article Annotated Code of Maryland as well as regulations governing Nursing Practice Title 10: Sub-title 27 of the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) can be accessed through the Maryland Board of Nursing's website

In addition, the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs, the Criteria for the Evaluation of Clinical Nurse Specialist Master's, Practice Doctorate, and Post-Graduate Certificate Educational Programs, the Criteria for Programmatic Accreditation of Midwifery Education Programs and the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs Guidelines for Counting Clinical Experience provide information on precepting requirements.
